IAIN SMITH | HEAD OF CONSULTING SERVICES
How long have you worked for Modality Systems?
I started with Modality Systems as employee No.19 back in January 2012, so coming up to 7 years. It feels like our feet haven't touched the ground since.
What attracted you to the company?
I knew the name Modality Systems from the industry. At that time, I had several conversations with James Rodd (CEO). Talking with James about the UC industry at that time gave me a new look on life outside of the 9 to 5 corporate space which really appealed to me, and one which I’ve never looked back on.
What was your first day like?
Those first days are vivid in my mind as it happened fast from acceptance of the job to starting with Modality Systems. As I’m northern based (Leeds), on my first day I traveled to St Albans where I spent the day with Nick Seagrave (CTO) who gave me a run-down of the overall Consulting team and the current ongoing projects. Following a couple of days bedding in with the culture of Modality Systems and how the company operates, I was out doing consulting pre-sales with Adrian Sturdy (Account Director) in the north for a safety ware company (which we won!)
What does working here mean to you?
It hard not to wax lyrical about Modality Systems, but genuinely I work with the brightest and best brains in the UC industry, using cutting edge technology, AND more importantly within a global team who are all striving in the same direction of success for the clients we are engaged with. Ever since being in Modality, there have been opportunities to progress. Without doubt Modality is the best place I’ve worked and is one I’ve recommended to many people over the years.
How would you describe what you do?
Over the years my role has changed somewhat from starting as a senior consultant through a series of promotions to what it is now Head of Consulting Services. I manage a team of 25+ highly skilled consultants around design, strategy and deployment of Microsoft UC products plus the wider 3rd party UC ecosystem i.e: Skype for Business Server/Online, Microsoft Teams and the Microsoft 365 portfolio of applications.
Describe Modality Systems in one word:
What's the best part of your job?
There are lots of parts of my job which I look at fondly. But I guess the best part is being allowed to ‘make a difference’. This could be around senior management elements, or within the consulting team as in supporting what they are doing, or actually with clients themselves and helping them realise the potentional of UC to their business.
Describe a typical day:
My day is more management now, working with Steve Mugridge (COO) around the direction of the company and financial forecasting. And with Andy Buchanan (Head of Global Sales) on the consulting sales pipeline forecasting, as well as the day-to-day management of the consulting teams' well-being and direction.
If you could have one super power, what would it be?
The ability for Instant Recall from memory. I would love to get a print out of all the memories I’ve dismissed or forgotten about from my brain.
What's your favourite food?
I’m northern… so you can’t beat Shepherd’s Pie, Mash and Veg with lashings of gravy and mint sauce.
If you could be an animal, what would you be and why?
A Seagull - they have an easy life… They live by the sea, they don’t have to forage for food, they just hover then swoop down, pinch your chips, doughnut or jam waffle then they are off again. Plus when they see someone unpleasant passing, as a way of revenge they splatter gun the contents of their bowels over the persons best shirt. I’m telling you the noise a seagull makes is actually them laughing between themselves as they have targeted another unsuspecting victim for revenge.
